Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP)

Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) eliminate highly active substances in wastewater

Highly active organic substances, such as pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, hormones, ...), agrochemicals (biocides, pesticides) and their metabolites, are increasingly being detected in wastewater and therefore find their way into drinking water again and again. Often these are drug residues that get there via the consumers. Even industrial wastewater can be contaminated with highly active substances.

AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process) are efficient oxidation processes processes, being enabled to sefely inactivate highly toxic and active substances to remove same from wastewater.

Enviolet has been using various Advanced Oxidation Process in various oxidation processes for more than 25 years, especially in industrial wastewater treatment. In particular, uv-methods (uv-oxidation) in combination with ozone or hydrogen peroxide, Fenton's reagent or pure photolysis (photo-oxidation) are used to decontaminate wastewater. As Photo-Fentons Process the uv-irradiation in presence of hydrogen peroxide and metal salts, regularly ferric-salts, is designated. The "classic" uv-oxidation in wastewater is the photochemical activation of hydrogen peroxide, sometimes also the combination of uv-irradiation and ozonation.
Common to all these processes is the formation of a very oxidizing environment during the wastewater treatment, in which the pollutants are converted to bio-available water ingredients. With a sufficiently long treatment, the mineralization essentially takes place into carbon dioxide, water and salts.

For the destruction of drugs (API) from pharmaceutical production, advanced oxidation processes have prevailed in recent years as powerfull tools for wastewater treatment, especially uv-oxidation processes. A prerequisite for a good, economical function of the AOP, especially in uv-systems with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, is a long-term experience in dealing with the matrix of the different recipients, as well as the CIP-processes, from which the wastewater is made up at formulation sites. This mixture makes the application of successfull wastewater treatment demanding and places high requirements on the formulation of the Advanced Oxidation Process as well as on all components used, in particular the UV reactor as the central functional unit. A high selectivity of the AOP is essential for an economical and efficient overall sucessful wastewater treatment plant.

The advanced uv-oxidation plants are ideal for breaking down API, PhAC and are compact and cost-efficient. No other AOP is as powerfull and oxidizes the active ingredients and intermediate degradation products below their detection limit.
